The Global Energy Challenge

A stable and sustainable energy supply is one of the major issues of this Century. World-energy demand is expected to increase by about 70% in the coming 20 years, while the production of petroleum is likely to peak in this period. The combination of rising demand and declining production of conventional oil raises the question: What is the plan?

In his presentation Professor Snieder will give examples of what one can do as a teacher, student, consumer, businessman and as a citizen to make progress towards a more sustainable energy system.

2009 International Year of Astronomy

The International Year of Astronomy, 2009, is a worldwide, public celebration of astronomy, held to mark the 400th anniversary of Galileo turning a telescope to the sky. The Year has been endorsed by UNESCO.

IYA2009 is being coordinated by the International Astronomical Union. Australia is one of the 63 countries signed up to participate.

Funding to restore Stromlo treasure

The Australian National University has been awarded funding under the Federal Government’s Heritage Projects (Jobs Fund) to restore and stabilise the Reynold’s Telescope Dome that was severely damaged in the 2003 Canberra firestorm.

Gemini School Astronomy Contest Winner

The winning picture from the 2009 Gemini School Astronomy Contest has been revealed. Students at PAL College have helped to celebrate the public unveiling of the image of the "Glowing Eye Nebula" as part of the International Year of Astronomy. The nebula was observed with the Gemini South telescope at the suggestion of PAL College student Daniel Tran, whose Contest entry was judged as the best combination of scientific and artistic reasoning.
