ANU Undergraduate Scholarships

ANU Environment Scholarship

$10,000

A number of scholarships will be available in 2010 for undergraduate students from outside of Canberra and the Australian Capital Territory region who enrol in an environment-related program. 

Eligible programs are:
  • Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Science (Advanced)
  • Bachelor of Science (Resource and Environmental Management
  • Bachelor of Science (Forestry)
  • Bachelor Interdisciplinary Studies (Sustainability)
  • Bachelor Interdisciplinary Studies (Sustainability) Honours
  • Bachelor of Philosophy; and associated joint programs.
Value $10,000 per annum.

Duration
One year.

Retention
Scholars must maintain a Distinction (70 per cent) average each semester.

Selection is based on a combination of academic achievement and contribution to the community.


Requirements: To be eligible, you must:
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or Australian Permanent Resident,
  • reside outside Canberra and the Australian Capital Territory region,
  • have taken subjects or have life experience relevant to the study of the environment,
  • be an immediate school leaver, or have taken a gap year and not enrolled in any tertiary program during that time,
  • be intending to enrol in one of the specified programs,
  • be intending to complete at least one environment-related major,
  • achieve an ATAR of at least 95, or equivalent.

  • be studying an Australian Year 12 or New Zealand NCEA or International Baccalaureate in 2009, and
  • have put at least one ANU program as a preference through the University Admissions Centre (NSW & ACT).

ANU Honours Scholarships

Please note only one honours scholarship may be held at one time. Recipients of other ANU undergraduate scholarships should contact the Prizes and Undergraduate Scholarships Office (phone (02) 6125 4997) to check whether two scholarships may be held concurrently.

AL Hales Honours Year Scholarships in Geophysics and Geochemistry

$7,000 plus $4,500 relocation allowance

Closing Date for Applications: 30/11
The Research School of Earth Sciences awards 2 scholarships each year to the value of $7,000 plus reimbursement of up to $4,500 for relocation costs. Successful applicants will be enrolled in an appropriate department within the College of Physical Sciences and participate in that department's honours program. Research for the honours thesis will be undertaken in the Research School of Earth Sciences and supervision will be shared jointly between the department and the Research School of Earth Sciences.

These scholarships have been named in honour of Professor A. L. Hales, the first Director of the Research School of Earth Sciences, in recognition of his contributions to the School during its formative years. For further information see the Research School of Earth Sciences website.

Applications close on the 30 November, however RSES does accept late applications.


Requirements: Open to domestic students (permanent residents of Australia and New Zealand) intending to undertake the fourth year of a Bachelor of Science Honours degree and who are interested in undertaking a research project in the Research School of Earth Sciences. Applicants should have majored in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology or Materials Science.

ANU Honours Year Scholarships

$5,000

Closing Date for Applications: 31/10
The University offers up to 15 ANU Honours Year scholarships each year. In 2010 each scholarship will be worth $5,000.

Subject to the approval of the University Awards Committee an ANU Honours Year Scholarship may be held concurrently with other scholarships and awards. It is advisable that you contact Centrelink to establish if an ANU Honours Scholarship can be held without affecting your Youth Allowance or other benefit.

Requirements: You should be intending to enrol full-time at this University in the Honours Year of a program of study leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor with Honours OR in the final year of a program of study leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor with Honours where the honours component is an integral part of the final year.

It is essential that you contact the School where you are proposing to undertake Honours to establish that you have or will have the academic qualifications for entry into Honours and that the required resources will be available to you.

It is acknowledged that at this stage your acceptance into Honours may not yet be finalised. You do not need to wait for results before lodging an application. If you lodge an application and later become ineligible for Honours your application will be disregarded.

With the approval of the relevant School, you may commence the Honours Program in either first or second semester.

International students are eligible to apply.

Angus Nicholson Honours Scholarship in Science

A scholarship of $5,000 for a student who can demonstrate academic merit and a passion for his or her chosen field of science.

Requirements: The successful applicant will have provided supporting material as well as the names of two referees who are well placed to support the application and comment on the applicant's passion for science.

ANU Postgraduate Scholarships

ARC funded PhD Scholarship in Seismology

$26,000

Closing Date for Applications:
An exciting opportunity exists at the Research School of Earth
Sciences (Australian National University) for an individual with
appropriate undergraduate qualifications to take part in frontier
seismic research aimed at better understanding the internal structure of the Earth.

A PhD student position in Seismology is now available at the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University.

Applications and inquiries are invited from highly-qualified and
motivated students wishing to pursue a PhD degree in seismology.
Successful applicants will be joining a group of seismologists with
interests in various aspects of global and regional seismology (both
observational and theoretical) and computational geophysics, studying both Earth structure and seismic sources. For example, opportunities exist in exploiting large volumes of passive data recorded by a rolling array to improve seismic images of the Australian lithosphere and deep Earth structure, and participating in the deployment of broadband transects across various parts of Australia and consequent structural interpretation.

In addition to a PhD stipend (approximately AUS$26,000 pa, nominally tax free), funds for a new computer and travel to national and international conferences will be provided.

ANU Alumni PhD Scholarships

Each year the University offers up to one scholarship each for nationals of Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

ANU PhD Mid-Year Entry Scholarships

A small number of ANU PhD Scholarships which provide a stipend are funded by Colleges which may be available through mid-year entry or at other times of the year. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis. However, in accordance with strict criteria, the scholarship may be awarded for part-time study. International scholars must undertake study on a full-time basis. It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 August in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to the approval of the prospective supervisor, Head of Department and Dean/Director, a later start date may be possible. The date by which a scholarship must be taken up in a particular instance will be made clear in the formal letter of offer for the scholarship.

Scholarships are available for mid-year entry or at other times of the year; three years full-time with a possible six month extension; available to Australian and New Zealand citizens, and permanent residents of Australia. Other benefits include travel to Canberra; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance.

A number of ANU Tuition Scholarships are funded and awarded by individual Colleges and determined as part of the application process. This scholarship covers international student tuition fees.

Eligible Program is PhD. Maximum duration is three years full-time, with two possible six month extensions. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the relevant Graduate Studies Convener or a prospective supervisor, prior to lodging an application, to discuss the proposed research topic and related matters.

American Association Of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowships

Tuition scholarship

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation is the largest private supporter of graduate women. Established in 1881, the Association has a long and illustrious history of helping women achieve their personal and professional goals. International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the USA to women who are not US citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited institutions are supported.

Eligible Program is PhD. Up to fifty eight scholarships on offer.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree with first-class honours, or a research Master's degree from a recognized Australian university; Applicants must be Australian citizens; Applicants must have earned the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree by September 30, and must have applied to their proposed institutions of study by the time of application (no later than December 15); Selection criteria include an outstanding academic record, professional potential, and the potential of the field of study to improve the lives of women and girls in the fellow's country of origin; Preference is given to women residing in their home countries at the time of application.

Australian Development Scholarships

Closing Date for Applications: Varies for each country
The Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are available to many countries under agreements for development assistance from Australia. The scholarship numbers and fields of study for each country are determined annually in close consultation with partner governments. ADS are offered in two categories: Public and Open/Equity. The government or employer in a partner country nominates candidates for scholarships in the public category. Individuals may independently apply for a scholarship in the open/equity category, subject to any country-specific selection and eligibility criteria.

Eligible Programs include PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research, MPhil and postgraduate coursework. Some undergraduate programs may be approved under home country priority areas. Other Benefits include full tuition fee; travel to Canberra from outside Australia; basic health insurance; establishment allowance; introductory academic program.

Closing dates vary for each country.

Australian Leadership Award

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) are a regional scholarship and training scheme for future leaders aimed at enhancing mutual understanding, knowledge and innovation and building partnerships within the Asia-Pacific region.

Eligible Programs include PhD, MPhil and postgraduate coursework programs. Other Benefits include full tuition fee; travel to Canberra from outside Australia; basic health insurance; establishment allowance; introductory academic program; contribution to visa expenses.

Australian Postgraduate Awards

The Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) makes available each year a number of awards for study by research leading to a higher degree. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis, although, subject to strict criteria laid down by DEST, the award may be offered for part-time study.

Cambridge Australia Trust Scholarships

£7,800

Closing Date for Applications: 01/01
The Cambridge Australia Trust, in collaboration with the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, offers six to eight scholarships each year for students wishing to carry out PhD research at Cambridge University. These scholarships are awarded only to Australian citizens who are of outstanding academic merit and who are graduates of an Australian university.

Eligible Program is PhD.  Maximum Duration of three years full-time.  Other benefits include travel to and from Cambridge, a settling in allowance, and an annual living allowance of £7,800 per annum.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree with first-class honours, or a research Master's degree from a recognized Australian university; Applicants must be Australian citizens; Applicants must have: gained admission to Cambridge University to undertake a PhD degree; and a UK Overseas Research Scholarship [ORS] on the nomination of Cambridge University.

Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS)

Tuition scholarship

Closing Date for Applications: 31/08
The Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS) are available for study leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy and are funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). Because competition for the scholarships is intense, at ANU they are not awarded for study at the Master degree level. Successful applicants will study in areas in which the University has shown a particular research concentration.

Eligible Programs include PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research.  Maximum Duration is three years full-time, with two possible six month extensions (subject to change by DEEWR).

Requirements: Bachelors degree with first class honours, or a research Masters degree from a recognised university; International students; Applicants cannot be considered for an EIPRS if they have already commenced a program of study in Australia at the same level for which the scholarship is sought.

Fulbright Awards

up to $40,000

Closing Date for Applications: 31/9
The Fulbright Scholarship Program seeks to promote and increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and Australia through two way cultural and educational exchange. Grants are awarded to Australian students, scholars and professionals to study, teach, lecture and conduct research in the Unites States and to American students and scholars to engage in simlar activities in Australia. These grants are awarded each year, through a process of open competition, with grants awarded to individuals selected on the basis of academic excellence, professional qualifications and ambassadorial skills.

General Sir John Monash Awards

The General Sir John Monash Awards are for outstanding Australian citizens graduating from Australian universities to enable them to undertake postgraduate study abroad at the world’s best universities.

Eligible programs include PhD, MPhil.  Maximum duration is three years full-time.  Up to eight awards may be awarded annually.

Indigenous Australian Graduate Scholarships

Closing Date for Applications: 31/10
The Graduate Research School each year normally offers one scholarship to an indigenous Australian to undertake graduate study; three years full-time with a possible extension; applications are only open to Indigenous Australians.

Eligible programs include PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research, MPhil, Professional Doctorate by Coursework (and also Master by Coursework and Research, Master by Coursework, Graduate Diploma).  Maximum duration three years full-time, with a possible extension (PhD).

Requirements: Australian citizens; Permanent residents of Australia. Applications are only open to Indigenous Australians.

Lionel Murphy Australian Postgraduate Scholarships

$20,000 - $40,000

Closing Date for Applications: 01/09
A number of Australian and overseas postgraduate scholarships are awarded annually by the Trustees of the Lionel Murphy Foundation. These scholarships are known as the Lionel Murphy Australian Postgraduate Scholarships, or the Lionel Murphy Overseas Postgraduate Scholarships, as the case may be. R.G. Menzies Scholarship to Harvard

The Robert Gordon Menzies Scholarship to Harvard is Australia’s most prestigious national award for postgraduate study in the United States. Inaugurated in 1967 by prominent Australian alumni of Harvard to honour the Australian statesman and former prime minister, the Menzies Scholarship grants one annual award to a talented Australian who has gained admission to a Harvard graduate school. Re-entry scholarships for Graduate Research

The University offers each year a small number (usually only one) of Re-entry Scholarships for graduates who wish to resume academic studies after a break of at least three years since formal enrolment in a university program, the break normally being due to fulfillment of family obligations.

Eligible programs include PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research, MPhil.  Maximum duration for PhD or Professional Doctorate three years with a possible six-month extension; for MPhil one year with a possible extension of up to a further twelve months.

Research School of Earth Sciences Mervyn And Katalin Paterson Fellowship (Travel Grant)

The Fellowship is awarded annually on a competitive basis to permit students to travel overseas to attend a major international conference, summer school or to visit an overseas institution in order to gain valuable research or laboratory experience. Emphasis is on enrichment and diversification of the student's experience and must be directly relevant to the PhD topic. Funding is drawn from an endowment from Emeritus Professor Mervyn S. Paterson and Mrs Katalin Paterson supported by the University's Endowment for Excellence.

Eligible Program is PhD.  Maximum duration is three months full-time.

Submissions to RSES will be considered by the Mervyn and Katalin Paterson Fellowship Committee, comprising the Director, RSES or his/her nominee, plus two other members of the academic staff of the School chosen each year by Faculty Board, RSES. Applications should be supported by the supervisor and include a well defined proposal indicating how the student will benefit from the experience. If the proposal is for time at another institution details of the host institution’s acceptance must be provided. Details of any support from the host institution or other sources must also be provided.

Requirements: Postgraduate research students, enrolled full time in RSES and who have been enrolled for a minimum of 6 months; Students may not take up the Fellowship until after successful completion of their mid-term review; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; International Students.

Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Trust offers eleven Rhodes Scholarships in Australia each year, one for each State and five for Australia at Large. A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable at the University of Oxford. All fees are paid by the Trust directly to the College. In addition, a Rhodes Scholar receives a personal stipend and assistance with travelling expenses to the United Kingdom.
