ANU Honours Scholarships

Please note only one honours scholarship may be held at one time. Recipients of other ANU undergraduate scholarships should contact the Prizes and Undergraduate Scholarships Office (phone (02) 6125 4997) to check whether two scholarships may be held concurrently.

AL Hales Honours Year Scholarships in Geophysics and Geochemistry

$7,000 plus $4,500 relocation allowance

The Research School of Earth Sciences awards 2 scholarships each year to the value of $7,000 plus reimbursement of up to $4,500 for relocation costs. Successful applicants will be enrolled in an appropriate department within the College of Physical Sciences and participate in that department's honours program. Research for the honours thesis will be undertaken in the Research School of Earth Sciences and supervision will be shared jointly between the department and the Research School of Earth Sciences.

These scholarships have been named in honour of Professor A. L. Hales, the first Director of the Research School of Earth Sciences, in recognition of his contributions to the School during its formative years. For further information see the Research School of Earth Sciences website.

Applications close on the 30 November, however RSES does accept late applications.


Requirements: Open to domestic students (permanent residents of Australia and New Zealand) intending to undertake the fourth year of a Bachelor of Science Honours degree and who are interested in undertaking a research project in the Research School of Earth Sciences. Applicants should have majored in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology or Materials Science.

ANU Honours Year Scholarships

$5,000

Closing Date for Applications: 31/10
The University offers up to 15 ANU Honours Year scholarships each year. In 2010 each scholarship will be worth $5,000.

Subject to the approval of the University Awards Committee an ANU Honours Year Scholarship may be held concurrently with other scholarships and awards. It is advisable that you contact Centrelink to establish if an ANU Honours Scholarship can be held without affecting your Youth Allowance or other benefit.

Requirements: You should be intending to enrol full-time at this University in the Honours Year of a program of study leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor with Honours OR in the final year of a program of study leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor with Honours where the honours component is an integral part of the final year.

It is essential that you contact the School where you are proposing to undertake Honours to establish that you have or will have the academic qualifications for entry into Honours and that the required resources will be available to you.

It is acknowledged that at this stage your acceptance into Honours may not yet be finalised. You do not need to wait for results before lodging an application. If you lodge an application and later become ineligible for Honours your application will be disregarded.

With the approval of the relevant School, you may commence the Honours Program in either first or second semester.

International students are eligible to apply.

ARC Centre of Excellence for Anti-Matter Matter Studies Honours Scholarships

$5,000 plus relocation allowance up to $3,000

The Centre for Antimatter-Matter Studies (CAMS) is a collaboration of Australian universities and research institutions to study the interactions of electrons and positrons with different types of matter, from single atoms to biological molecules, surfaces and materials. The wide ranging research program brings together some of Australia's top scientists from a broad range of disciplines.

The CAMS ANU node offers Honours projects to complement the ongoing research activities being undertaken in the Centre.  Please view the availble research projects via the Centre website and contact the relevant chief supervisor directly for further information on the scientific aspects of the projects. Centre Scholarships are limited and will be offered on a competitive basis and determined on academic merit.

Requirements: These Scholarships are available to third year undergraduate students who are completing, or about to complete, an undergraduate degree in a related discipline and who intend to enrol in the Physics Honours Program at the Australian National University.  The student must be supervised by one of the Centre's Chief Investigators and must be working on a Centre related research project.

Angus Nicholson Honours Scholarship in Science

$5,000

A scholarship of $5,000 for a student who can demonstrate academic merit and a passion for his or her chosen field of science.

Closing date: 30 November each year


Requirements: The successful applicant will have provided supporting material as well as the names of two referees who are well placed to support the application and comment on the applicant's passion for science.

Current ANU students and external applicants are encouraged to apply.

AusIMM South Africa-Australia Minerals Scholarship

$5,000

Closing Date for Applications: 31/10/
The AusIMM South Africa-Australia Minerals Scholarship offers $5,000 to support field work and professional and academic development related travel to universities and minerals professionals for Honours projects in Southern Africa.

It is recommended that notice of interest should be submitted prior to 31 September.

Bok/RSAA Honours Year Scholarship in Astrophysics

$5,000 plus $4,500 relocation allowance

Closing Date for Applications: 31/10
The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics supports a scholarship of $5000 for a student in the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Astrophysics.

An additional $4,500 is available to students who transfer their Honours enrolment from outside the ACT to the ANU.

Requirements: Applicants must be intending to study astrophysics at honours level at ANU. Selection will be based on academic merit together with the field of study, availability of appropriate supervision and reports from two academic referees familiar with the applicant’s work.

Boyapati Computer Science and Mathematics Scholarship

$5,000

Closing Date for Applications: 30/11
This $5,000 Scholarship is funded by Vijay Boyapati, an alumnus of the Mathematical Sciences Institute. The aim is to encourage students to pursue a degree in the related fields of Computer Science and Mathematics.

Requirements: The Scholarship will be awarded to a student entering the final honours year of a bachelor degree in either the Department of Mathematics or the Department of Computer Science, and whose project is considered to be an appropriate mix of both areas. The primary criterion for award is academic merit.

Chemistry Honours Scholarship

$5,000 - $10,000

Closing Date for Applications: 31/10
Chemistry Honours Scholarships are available to outstanding students who have not been successful in the central ANU Honours Scholarship round.

Successful local students will be awarded a scholarship of $5,000. Non-local students will receive an additional $5,000 relocation incentive allowance.

Requirements: Students must have applied for an ANU Honours Scholarship, and must not hold any other scholarship. Students must have at least a Credit average for 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate courses.

You should be intending to enrol full-time at this University in the Honours Year of a program of study leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor with Honours.

It is essential that you contact the Research School of Chemistry (RSC) to establish that you have or will have the academic qualifications for entry into Honours.

It is acknowledged that at the time that you apply your undergraduate results may not yet be finalised. You do not need to wait for results before lodging an application. If you lodge an application and later become ineligible for Honours your application will be disregarded.

With the approval of the RSC you may commence the Honours Program in either first or second semester of the academic year.

In order to be considered, students must have applied for an ANU Honours Scholarship. Applications open on 1 August each year and close on 31 October. If you intend to commence your Honours in second semester you will need to apply in the above listed round. There is only one round of offers each year.

Hilary Booth Scholarship

$5,000

Closing Date for Applications: 30/11
The MSI has instituted a $5,000 scholarship in memory of Hilary Booth, who passed away suddenly in May 2005.

Requirements: The Scholarship will be awarded to a student in the mathematical sciences entering the final honours year, or their third year with the intention of proceeding to an honours degree. The primary criterion for award is academic merit, though preference may be given to applicants satisfying one or more of the following criteria (i) A student returning to study after a break from higher education; (ii) A student not from the ANU; (iii) An interest in mathematical biology.

Mathematical Science Institute Honours Scholarship

$5,000

Closing Date for Applications: 30/11
A number of scholarships of $5,000 plus relocation allowance for Honours in the Centre for Mathematics and its Applications or the Department of Mathematics in the College of Physical Sciences.

Requirements: The Scholarship will be awarded to a student entering the final honours year of a bachelor degree in the Mathematics honours program. The primary criterion for award is academic merit.

National Year of Astronomy Honours Scholarship

$5,000

Closing Date for Applications: 20/11/2009
The National Year of Astronomy Honours Scholarship has been made available for 2010 to celebrate the National Year of Astronomy. This is a one-off scholarship that will be offered to a student who is accepted into the Honours Program at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics for 2010 commencement.


Requirements: Available to students who are enrolled or have been enrolled at ANU or another Australian institution in a program of study leading to the award of a pass degree of Bachelor. Successful applicants will have a strong academic record and have undertaken Majors appropriate to undertaking Honours in Astrophysics. Eligible students in combined programs will also be able to apply.

Selection is based on academic merit and two referee reports.

Research School of Physics and Engineering Honours Year Scholarships

$5,000 plus relocation allowance up to $4,500

The aim of the RSPE Honours Scholarship is to encourage outstanding undergraduate students to continue into research degrees and careers.

These Scholarships are available to third year undergraduate students who are completing, or about to complete, an undergraduate degree in a related discipline and who intend to enrol in the Physics Honours Program at the Australian National University.

RSPE Honours Scholarships are valued at $5,000 with a further $4,500 available for relocation and travel costs for students who are transferring to the University (conditions apply).

Requirements: These Scholarships are available to third year undergraduate students who are completing, or about to complete, an undergraduate degree in a related discipline and who intend to enrol in the Physics Honours Program at the Australian National University.  Selection is based solely on the basis of academic merit.
